Two more Shredding Events in June

There is a LOT of paper out there that needs to be shredded. I see it everyday with my clients. Here are TWO more upcoming shredding events in June.

Saturday, June 13, 9-12 am: THE GRATEFUL SHRED II, Clara Barton Community Center, 7425 MacArthur Boulevard, Cabin John, MD (301-229-0010)

All proceeds go to support activities at the Clara Barton Community Center. Bring your materials or you may drop off material to shred, starting at 8 A.M. Requested voluntary donation: $5 per box of paper (a one-cubic-foot storage box or the equivalent). Or you can have a half-box or the equivalent shredded for $3 or a quarter-box for $2. Paper bags are OK containers.

The following can be shredded along with office paper: staples, paper clips, rubber bands, folders, binder clips, hanging folders (even with metal strips), and labels. But not newspapers, 3-ring binders, cardboard, heavy plastic, heavy metals, boxes, trash, floppy disks, or CDs.

Saturday, June 20, 8-11 am: NBC4 Safe & Secure Community Shred, Northern Virginia Community College, 8333 Little River Turnpike, Annandale, VA.

You may bring up to five boxes of personal papers for shredding (no CDs or credit cards). It's the best way to protect your identity...and it's good for the environment too!

Organizing Kid's Stuff in time for Summer

With the arrival of my two little ones and having worked with several families these past few years, I know that kids are notorious for misplacing things and then begging for you to help them find them. And, once your kids get to preschool age, they have many more items that they are likely to loose. Unfortunately, kids at this age don't yet understand that when they just drop their stuff on the kitchen counter, it doesn't always remain there.

However, this is the perfect time to start teaching your children how to organize. Trust me, they aren't too young and starting this early will pay off.

-Create consequences: If you don't let your child play with this truck because he left it out, he will eventually learn to put it away.

-Everything has its own place: Try and buy separate bins or containers for toys, school supplies, etc. See-through containers work the best. Then help your child with labels or pictures on the outside of the bin so they know what is inside and your child will learn where each item goes. Get them into the habit of putting everything back where it belongs before starting a new activity.

-Make a game of it: If your child looses something, try giving them clues to help them figure out where they last had it. This way, he will look for the item and not for you!

Give the gift of ORGANIZATION for Mother's Day as seen on Cnn.com

I was reading Cnn.com this evening and came across an article on 7 low cost gifts to keep Mom healthy on Mother's Day. While I wasn't shocked to see number 3 on the list, I thought it was so telling about just how wonderful giving the gift of organization really is.

I have been selling tons of gift certificates for Mother's Day because children, husbands, partners and friends are realizing just how precious the gift of organization can be for "Mom."

Number three on the list was:

3. Give the gift of organization.
Instead of making a photo album of family snapshots (although that's nice too), make your mom a folder containing all of her medical records, Savard said. "Put a folder together of test results and vital information so it is all in one place," she said. Make sure to include a list of all of her medications and what times she takes them. "Having all this information in one place could end up saving your mom's life," Savard said.

Click For Clutter-A new site

My aunt started a new website called Click For Clutter. This site is a professional organizer's dream! What a great idea for getting rid of clutter. She is leaving it up to those people on the Internet to help her make decisions about all the clutter in her life. Everyday she is going to post a new item and everyone who writes in will help her make a decision with what to do with it. I am very excited to watch the progress of her clutter and where it ends up. I think this website will help her tremendously with getting rid of her clutter both mentally and physically.

I am going to help her along the way (she is out in CA) as much as I can. I know that as a professional organizer I can coach someone through the process of decluttering, but that this new site will be motivation for her to actually do it!

Here is the information on her site: Click For Clutter is my New Year’s resolution for 2009–a commitment to clear out the clutter of a lifetime. I’m drowning in clutter and I’m desperate.
So I am sorting through all the stuff I’ve accumulated for decades– from the most mundane items to a mink coat. Every day, I will post something and tell the story behind it. And everyday you can vote. Should I: KEEP IT?TOSS IT?GIVE IT TO YOU! If you want something, write a comment and tell me why. I’ll select someone who asks, and send it for free. This is a public commitment — so I can’t procrastinate. If I don’t do this now, my kids will have to do it later. I need your help to make it happen. So consider this a public service.Keep it simple. And Click for Clutter

New Year's Resolution? Container Store was PACKED!

I was at the Container Store yesterday purchasing items for one of my clients. I don't know if most of you know, but I get a 10% discount on all products that I purchase from the Container Store because I am a professional organizer. So, as a service to my clients, I purchase items that we use in their homes or offices and get them at a discount.

While many people had off of work yesterday, I was still in awe of how many people were in the store! The Container Store is my home away from home and never in my life have I seen it so busy. One of the reasons for all the people is that the stores is having their annual 30% off of Elfa sale. It is an amazing sale that everyone should take advantage of if they are planning on using Elfa anywhere in their home. I am BIG fan of Elfa and have actually planned a few spaces with my clients who will be taking part in the huge savings.

But I know that not all the people in the store were there for the Elfa sale. This is of course just an observation but it seemed to me that everyone was there to start 2009 on the right foot..more organized! I saw people buying things for their office, their kitchens, their closets. I even spoke to a woman that was there with her husband and she said that one of her resolutions was to start 2009 more organized than 2008!

So I guess people are getting on the organized train and I would love to help get you there! I think it is one of the most important resolutions you can make for 2009 as it impacts so many areas of your life.
